Dunn came to his conclusion after examining the age preferences expressed in 22,400 singles ads on popular dating websites in North America, Europe, Australia and Japan. He states that he found no proper evidence to suggest that there are enough older women looking for younger men to warrant calling cougar dating anything more than just a craze that has being triggered and influenced by the media and celebrities.

Of course, it hasn’t taken long for a number of self proclaimed cougars to hit back at Dunn. Journalist Valerie Gibson who is the author of ‘Cougar: A Guide for Older Women Dating Younger Men’ says that the recent increase in cougar dating is not a phase or a fad but that society has become more accepting of older women dating younger men. Cougar relationships existed hundreds of years ago but society regarded them as morally wrong and even shameful. Times have thankfully now changed!

There has definitely been a rise in cougar orientated websites and events such as cougar conventions geared around older women meeting younger men. There is a huge market for it and cougar dating isn’t a trend that will wane as soon as Cougar Town goes off our screens because for many, it is a lifestyle.

Judging from the number of cougars who are honest and proud about their dating preferences, and the number of successful cougar relationships, I think it is safe to say that contrary to Dunn’s research conclusions, the cougars are here to stay!

So what exactly is it about these older women that cause younger men to fall at their feet? Is it just down to the way they look? After all, celebrities such as Kylie Minogue and Demi Moore certainly don’t have anything to worry about in the aesthetics department. However, many men claim that they find cougars to be mysteriously attractive in a way that isn’t always down to appearance, but more so related to the cougar’s wisdom and independence. Cougars know what they want, they are interesting to be around, they know how they want to be treated by a man and probably won’t put up with the nonsense or games that can often come with dating.

Is this therefore a situation whereby the sense of knowledge and experience is more attractive to men than simply looking good? Some men could have the pick of the bunch when it comes to younger ladies but they still prefer to date an older woman because she is wise, intriguing and will likely keep them on their toes!

So why is this? The science or theory behind a woman’s increasing sexual activity or desires is simply due to her fertility which declines with age. Therefore the hormones automatically react to this. It’s harder to get pregnant as you get older and the female body copes with this by wanting more sex. This lustful behaviour in older women isn’t a recent ‘trend’ – our female ancestors also experienced exactly the same feelings!

A psychologist named David Buss carried out a survey and asked 827 women to fill in questionnaires about their sexual habits. The survey concluded that women who had passed their peak fertility years but had not yet reached the menopause were the most sexually active. Regardless of whether these women were mothers, married or single, those in the age bracket of 27 – 45 were more sexually interested or active than those in their early 20’s.

So, if you are going to date a cougar – be prepared. Older women are proven to be more lustful, and now you know why!

According to Time Out Chicago it seems that the Chicago is definitely the place to be and last weekend it wasn’t just a couple of cougars who paid the city that never sleeps a visit, but a whole convention!

Yes, this was actually the 2nd Annual Cougar Convention where a huge group of cougars joined forces and took to the bar and dance floor of a Chicago hotel, proving that cougars are not just a type of woman who likes to date a younger guy, but in fact, as Time Out described ‘a movement’.

Let’s face it; that’s a fairly old-fashioned perception of the term ‘cougar’ and thankfully time and attitudes have moved on. In recent years when older women and younger men have maintained very happy, fulfilled and successful relationships, the word cougar has gradually become one that women embrace and find flattering! With celebs such as Kim Cattrall, Demi Moore and Helen Mirren all renowned cougars, they are certainly not perceived to be conniving or manipulative but strong, confident, independent and beautiful women that most men of any age would love to date!

Today, cougars are now seen as sexy and desirable. Younger men are attracted to women who are self-assured and know what they want out of life and for women especially, these qualities all come and blossom with age and a woman is even said to be in her prime in her 40’s. Men find these qualities attractive and sexy and at the end of the day, would much rather date a confident woman in her 40’s as opposed to an insecure and dependant one in their 20’s.

There has been a fair bit of talk surrounding the hit US show ‘Cougar Town’; more specifically a rumour that the name may be changed. Courteney Cox who stars as ‘Jules’ in the show is apparently in full favour of this, claiming that the current name is misleading.

The programme’s executive producer Bill Lawrence recently confirmed that a name change could be on the cards as the theme has changed since the pilot. Cox has also commented that the show is for men and women and deals with real issues that aren’t all relating to older women dating younger men.

A renowned ‘cougar’ herself and married to David Arquette who is 8 years her junior, despite her alleged eagerness to change the name of the show, Cox has often stated that she is proud to be called a cougar.

With California being the largest state in the union in terms of population, it’s hardly surprising that there are more Cougared.com members there than anywhere else in the country.

The Golden State is of course the home of LA and in particular Hollywood, where glamor, celebrity and a liberal attitude rule, so it shouldn’t come as a shock that the more mature ladies there do not consider themselves too old for some fun with a younger man; this state is cougar-central and number one in the list.

Laid back Florida is the number two cougar state, proving that there’s more to the Sunshine State than retirement homes, orange groves and alligators. A little Miami Vice anyone?

Good ol’ Texas is number three, as you might expect from such a huge area, where the oil (and cash) flows and the mature ladies like their cowboys fresh from the saddle with minimum baggage.

Perhaps New York women have been taking their lead from hot cougar icon Samantha in the hit show Sex and the City:The Big Apple and its surrounding region sits proudly in fourth spot.

So that’s the mega states but remember that cougar/cub relationships are everywhere. It isn’t just the big boys that deserve a mention in our list of the top cougar states.

Some have way more cougars than you would expect considering the size of the population. It’s here that the trend of acceptance for cougars and cubs is really taking hold and cougar culture is making headway.

Arizona has only the 20th largest female population in the country, but comes out 8th from the top in terms of the number of ladies using Cougared.com. Hey, maybe it gets lonely out there in the desert!

Similarly, Alabama, Oregon, Nevada, Hawaii, Washington, Colorado and Alaska have much higher proportions of cougar women than their relatively small populations would suggest. So, if you’re planning a holiday or a weekend away with your buddies in search of some cougar/cub action, these areas are hotspots.

Where the Cougars are in perfect proportion

There are some states that have their cougars in perfect proportion; and no, were not talking about those ladies’ vital statistics, shapely as we know they are. In Kansas, Delaware, and Rhode Island, the proportion of women using Cougared.com is just what we expected compared to the size of the female population. But remember, ladies, there is always room for more gorgeous older women.

These cougars aren’t heading south

Sadly not every state benefits from a bounty of beautiful mature women out to date younger men. Down in some of the southern states we’ve found that there are fewer cougars on Cougared.com than there should be when the population is taken into account.

Perhaps those southern belles prefer their good old farm boys a little more their own age, but in Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Kentucky and Louisiana there is plenty of space for more Cougared.com ladies.
